PNW Winter Wedding Magic in Port Gamble:
Cozy Christmas Celebration
A Cozy, Festive PNW Winter Wedding You’ll Never Forget
When I think back on that PNW winter wedding I filmed in Port Gamble, Washington, it feels like stepping into a snow globe full of holiday magic, minus the snow, but doubled-up on charm and Christmas spirit.
Port Gamble Wedding | Colleen & Anthony
A Morning Ferry, a Quiet Drive, and a Town That Feels Like a Movie Set
The day began with a quiet early-morning ferry ride from the Seattle area, followed by a winding drive up the Olympic Peninsula to the small, storybook town of Port Gamble. With a classic white chapel at one end and a waterfront events pavilion at the other, it felt like we’d stepped into a movie set. When there’s a wedding, you really do feel like you’re celebrating across the entire town.
Inside the Airbnb: Warmth, Christmas Décor, and Holiday Spirit
Outside, the sky hung low with a soft drizzle, classic PNW December weather. But stepping into Coleen and Anthony’s Airbnb was like walking straight into a Christmas card: a crackling fire, Christmas figurines in every alcove, soft lights glowing in every corner. The holiday décor wasn’t just an accent; it was the heartbeat of the day.
And honestly? I wasn’t even surprised. I already knew this was going to be the most Christmas of all Christmas weddings. Santa was scheduled to officiate. A bagpipe band would be performing. There was a horse-drawn carriage, an ugly sweater contest, and a Scottish group dance on the timeline. This wedding had everything.
As a PNW wedding videographer, these are the moments I live for: a wedding dripping with personality and full of traditions that make it unmistakably theirs.
First Looks in the Chapel
Once ready, Coleen and Anthony headed to St. Paul’s Church, the iconic white chapel in Port Gamble (venue details). They decided to do first looks with their parents first. This is always such a sweet moment and well worth the time on a wedding day. Weddings move fast, and couples are often surprised by how little time they actually spend with their parents. Doing a first look is a beautiful way to carve out a meaningful family moment.
The interior of St. Paul’s, white molding accented with soft cyan walls, glows beautifully on a winter day. The light reflects and contrasts in a way that makes skin tones look incredible on video, which is especially important on rainy PNW days when outdoor group portraits aren’t guaranteed or honestly likely. Having a great indoor photo space with good lighting is essential for fall and winter weddings.
A Santa-Led Ceremony Full of Joy
Then came the ceremony, and it was one for the books. Santa himself (@revjimbeidle) stepped up to officiate, blending heartfelt sentiment with lighthearted humor. At one point, he read a festive adaptation of First Corinthians that had everyone laughing. My favorite was how he accented important moments with a classic booming “Ho, ho, ho!”. You know the couple and their guests will talk about this ceremony for years.
A Horse-Drawn Journey to the Reception
When the ceremony ended, the magic didn’t stop. Coleen and Anthony exited the chapel and climbed into a vintage horse-drawn carriage, riding through town to the Hood Canal Vista Pavilion for their reception. It felt like watching a winter storybook unfold in real time.
At the Pavilion, they were greeted by the Keith Highlanders Bagpipe Band (khpb.org), for a traditional Scottish welcome. Inside, Christmas décor filled the room, multiple trees, garlands, fairy lights, even a Santa’s Village for the kids to ask for gifts. It was festive without feeling overwhelming, like the perfect blend of wedding elegance and holiday cheer.
Lunch was a full Christmas buffet, mashed potatoes, stuffing, gravy, cranberry sauce… I might have gone a little heavy on the cranberry sauce but no regrets.
Ugly Sweaters, Scottish Dancing, and Family Traditions
After dinner, guests changed into their ugliest Christmas sweaters for the contest. The competition was fierce, but my personal favorite was the space-cat Santa sweater—truly unforgettable.
Then Coleen and her dance group gathered everyone for a traditional Scottish group dance. Anthony jumped in with full enthusiasm, and the whole room felt alive with music and movement.
A Winter Sunset to End the Story
As the evening mellowed, something unexpected happened: the clouds finally parted. A streak of soft golden light poured across the Hood Canal, December’s brief but magical sunset window.
We stepped outside for portraits, wandering just up the hill from the Pavilion where the water, trees, and setting sun meet in one of the best natural backdrops on the Peninsula. After a day full of festivity and movement, this quiet moment felt like the perfect closing scene.
Coleen and Anthony’s wedding was everything a winter celebration should be, warm, joyful, intentional, and full of moments that make you stop and smile.

PNW Winter Wedding FAQ
What is the weather like for a PNW winter wedding?
PNW winters bring soft rain, overcast skies, and cold temperatures. While snow is rare, the moody light and cozy indoor settings make for beautiful wedding photos and video. Just make sure you get your portraits done before the sun goes down; which can be as early as 4:30pm.
Is Port Gamble a good location for a winter wedding?
Absolutely. The town offers stunning indoor options like St. Paul’s Church and the Hood Canal Vista Pavilion. Venues that shine in winter with good natural lighting and historic charm.
How far is Port Gamble from Seattle?
Port Gamble is about 2–2.5 hours from Seattle, depending on ferry schedules and traffic. The ferry ride is part of the charm, offering gorgeous water views for out-of-town relatives on their way to the venue.
Do winter weddings photograph and film well in the Pacific Northwest?
Yes! Winter’s soft, diffused light is flattering for skin tones and creates cinematic, moody visuals, especially when paired with cozy indoor décor or winter coats.
Should we plan for indoor portraits at a PNW winter wedding?
It’s essential to have a beautiful indoor backup for a PNW winter wedding, since outdoor sessions can be unpredictable.
What should guests wear to a PNW winter wedding?
Encourage guests to dress warmly and comfortably, especially if there are transitions between venues. Layers are key.
How early should we book a videographer for a winter wedding?
In the PNW you want to book your wedding videographer ideally 9-12 months before your wedding.
Do venues offer off-season discounts for winter weddings?
Many PNW venues offer seasonal pricing or winter specials. It can be worth asking during your tour or consultation.
How can we add festive touches without going full holiday-themed?
Subtle hints like winter themed stationary, candlelit tables, evergreen greenery, mulled wine, or Christmas lights can create a winter vibe without leaning into Christmas décor, unless you want to! Some venues will also have Christmas decorations of their own, which can save you a lot of money.
Is travel difficult for guests attending a winter wedding in the PNW?
Not usually. While rain is common, snow is rare in most low-elevation areas like Port Gamble or Seattle. Just ensure guests have ferry info, parking details, and any weather-related updates. If you are looking at a Leavenworth wedding or an elopement in the Cascades make sure you have a car that is good in snow and carry chains.
